I think I need to draw my rabbit in his hoodie more, since it’s awfully adorable.
If you’re near the Bay Area, don’t forget that this weekend is Alternative Press Expo, at which I’ll be selling my newly released book, and tomorrow night from 7 to 10 pm is the release party for my book at Mission Comics and Art, and I’d love people to stop by! The Facebook page for the release party is here so check it out!
My new book published by Northwest Press is going to be released this weekend, and in the upcoming months there should be lots of events and related things going on, and I plan to do readings and several conventions and all sorts of stuff like that to promote the book as best I can. The fastest way to be notified about things like that would probably be to either Like the Facebook page for my comics, or to follow me at twitter.com/bloodoftheland .
Coming up this weekend will be Alternative Press Expo, during which I’ll be at the Northwest Press table if you’d like to come meet me or see the book. APE is one of my favorite shows, and it’s always a lot of fun and a great way to meet people involved in comics, so if you’re in the Bay Area this weekend, I’d highly suggest you come. Saturday night, from 7 to 10 pm at Mission Comics and Art there will be a release party for my book with drinks, snacks, and all sorts of cool people, so come out to that, too, if you’re in the area, and it should be a lot of fun. The Facebook event page for the release party is here so you can get all the information about it.
I’ll be posting information soon about different ways of ordering the book and different places where you can buy it, and you can also tell your local comic shop to order copies for you through Diamond. I’m planning to go to Bent Con in December, and hopefully go down to Anaheim for Wondercon next year, so I’ll keep you all posted through this website and through twitter and etc. In the meantime, there are lots of comics coming up, so keep checking back Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for updates to the website. Yesterday afternoon I was having some trouble with the website, so that day’s post wasn’t made until later at night, but so far over the last few weeks the Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday schedule has been pretty reliable. Thanks to everybody who’s been enjoying the comics through the website, and to everybody who’s commented or said really kind things to me about them. There’s a whole lot more coming up, so I hope people are excited to read it, and I hope all of you enjoy the book!
When a bunch of these comics are together in the book, there is supposed to be a run of short dating stories that are a few strips each following the Boy From Santa Cruz and Marching to “The City” stories, and they’re all dating stories about match ups that might have seemed like they had potential at first, but just didn’t go anywhere. This series is the last of them in that part of the book, and I went out with this guy three times before it ended. It actually wasn’t bad or anything, we had some cute dates and all that, but just nothing was clicking at that point as far as relationship potential, and it ended pretty quickly.
I wanted to have this Caravaggio homage in the book because of the Caravaggio references in the Boy From Santa Cruz storyline, but the first time I drew a version of this painting was around four years ago, so I decided to redraw it. I redrew it without really looking at the first version I had done, which you can see here , because I wanted to see how differently I would draw it four years on, and then when I finished this version and looked at the older version, it was pretty shocking how hideous the older one looked to me. I mean, I guess it looks alright, I feel that way about a lot of my older drawings, but man do I like the new one better.
In the next couple of days I’m going to be posting a blog about the release party for my upcoming book and some events I’ll be participating in in the near future, so check back. And I’m gonna be sticking to the planned posting schedule for a while still, so next new comic will be posted on Monday :)
It’s sort of a running joke that whenever the rabbit gets those little hearts over his head, it’s at times that aren’t exactly romantic in a traditional way, but come on, who wouldn’t love a message like that?
This drawing came about after I had asked this boy if he’d like to send some photos that I could use as reference for the cover of my book. I liked the idea of my rabbit being into a boy with bunny ears for a few reasons, and it seemed like it would be a good cover, so I told him roughly what I had in mind with a boy with his wrists tied behind his back and all that. When he sent me pictures, he sent some with his hands behind his back and all that, and he also sent some that were just cute and playful like this drawing, and I still wanted the boy on the cover to be tied up, but the other pictures were cute and sexy enough that I wanted to make a drawing of them too, so I did this one, which ended up being the illustration I used for the title page for chapter four. I actually used bits of several photos for this and also for the drawing of the cover, using the legs I liked best from one photo, the facial expression I liked best from another, and etc., to make what seemed like the best pose. One advantage to drawing somebody from life is that you can move them around until you get it right, but these drawings I think turned out pretty well for being done from bits and pieces of photo reference.
This is the first comic in a brief series that explains how I met the bunny boy that’s on the cover of my book, and some of why I drew him. We started talking online around a year ago and, actually still do talk quite a bit. Dunno if I’ll ever meet him, what with him living in the UK and all, but he’s smart, funny, fun to talk to, and also incredibly cute and into the sub side of the sadomasochistic spectrum, so basically he’s a walking wet dream. Of course, he still thinks he’s fat and awkward and gets all self conscious about sending me pictures, even though some cartoonist from across the world has thought he’s cute enough to draw four times and I even put him on the cover of my book, that somehow can’t beat it into his head that he’s attractive.
I still believe there’s such a thing as a guy that can do all the hot things like that, and then is also able to date and communicate like he’s an adult. Somewhere…
I’m not sure what’s wrong with me that I’d put up with this, but some of the drunken dirty text messages were definitely totally hot.
