I decided it would be fun to make drawings from some of the various images like this I’ve accrued over time. There’s something uniquely trashy, by which I mean sexy, about photos that guys take of themselves with their camera phone in bathroom mirrors.
I still believe there’s such a thing as a guy that can do all the hot things like that, and then is also able to date and communicate like he’s an adult. Somewhere…
I’m not sure what’s wrong with me that I’d put up with this, but some of the drunken dirty text messages were definitely totally hot.
So, this is the drawing that I drew during the evening that the last couple comics were talking about. I think it’s a cute drawing, it was fun to do. Part of the idea of the upcoming book is to intercut drawings of guys I’ve gone out with with comics talking about the circumstances that surrounded me doing the drawing, to sort of combine sketchbook diary type comics, and the more planned out strips, which I think makes an interesting juxtaposition, because the strips are the more polished reflections on the events, done after the fact, and the portrait drawings are mementos actually made while the events of the story in the strips were taking place.
I’m not sure the person I drew this about liked it exactly, but I didn’t really mean for it to be insulting. I think it’s interesting the various kinds of situations people can get themselves into to rationalize what they’re doing, and all those sort of not-quite-official, but if it’s not a relationship what the hell is it, then? sort of arrangements that go on.
OK, I think I’ll explain a little bit of what’s going to be in the upcoming book to give some of these comics a little more context, since I’m posting again out of the order that they’ll be read in the book.
The first chapter of the book is called A Inordinate Fondness, and it’s meant to introduce a bit about some of the main characters and what they’re interested in in life. It’s around half newer strips, and half stuff from the last year or so, and contains a lot of the strips I did a while ago about the rabbit spending his time watching porn. The second chapter is Boy From Santa Cruz, and presents that story nicely in the proper reading order that I kept saying I’d prefer it to be read in, back when I was posting it all out of order. Actually now, though, it’s been rearranged on the website and if you look at it from the beginning, I think it reads pretty well as a story now. In the book, it’s also going to be intercut with a few strips from the storyline about Rickets and Prester, and there will be extra little new drawings and things throughout the book. The third chapter of the book with be Marching to “The City”, the storyline I was posting a little while ago about Rickets’ past.
The fourth chapter of the book is actually where this strip I’m posting today is located in the book. That chapter is meant to show a few rapid fire short dating stories about different guys I went out with after the Boy From Santa Cruz, and it also has more of the storyline between Rickets and Prester, which is intercut throughout the book. The fifth and last chapter of the book is called, “It’s Like Heaven”, and it contains some more dating strips, and also more about Rickets and Prester, and I think it hopefully brings the characters to some nice little epiphanies about themselves. This is all an ongoing project for me, and I know things that happen to the characters right after the book, and I know things that happened to them before, and I also intend to keep writing autobiographical things about my life as it goes on, so there are parts of the story coming up that I don’t know because they haven’t happened to me yet. Aside from that, though, I think the book will take the characters on a good emotional journey, and hopefully be an enjoyable reading experience on its own, and then people can decide if they want to continue to read these comics and find out more.
If you go back through the archives, there have been two comics with Prester painting something over the last year and a half or so. In the next few strips, it’s gonna be revealed what he was painting in one of those pieces, and the other one is related.
After this one, I’m planning to return to the Boy From Santa Cruz storyline and finish it up, so the next one of those, technically the first one of the story when it’s all done and you can read it chronologically, will be posted on Wednesday.
The last few strips were actually kinda amalgamations of a couple dates from the time post-boy from Santa Cruz, and part of the idea of the whole Rabbit and Wolf storyline is to kinda give an overview of my dating life around that time, and coming up to the present. This drawing was done from life of a boy I went on a couple of dates with around that time. I meant the drawing to be sweet and I thought he looked cute in it, but he thought he looked fat.
I’m hoping to one day go out with someone again whose conversation is more interesting than, or comparably interesting to, their penis, but I’ve also been told recently that I’m too picky with guys, so I guess maybe I’ll have to choose one or the other at some point. I don’t plan on being in a relationship with someone I don’t want to have sex with, though, so I guess maybe there’s not gonna be much conversation in my future if I do that.
